Lashes are such a big part of my makeup routine that I love to experiment with and I always get super excited when I get to try a new tube of mascara. I find that it’s the one step of my makeup that really helps change up my look instantly.
Although I haven’t found my absolute holy grail mascara so far and I’ve tried a bunch of mascaras in the past that really underperformed over the years, I’ve been really loving the following 5 non-waterproof products to help me achieve my perfect dark, voluminous lash look.
If you want to achieve beautiful, bold lashes without wearing falsies or getting eyelash extensions, you need to have these mascara staples in your beauty kit!
Curl Your Lashes
Before I even start talking about my mascara staples, let’s first talk about lash curlers. It’s personal preference to curl your lashes before or after putting on mascara but there is a chance that you will damage your lashes if you curl your lashes a lot after applying mascara.
To prepare my lashes, I like curling my lashes first before putting any mascara. I then go back and gently curl my lashes again after I put mascara on only if they’ve dropped slightly after applying (but I recommend doing this infrequently).
My favorite lash curler that I’ve been using for close to a decade is the Shu Uemura Lash Curler. I recommend it to those with short lashes because it’ll catch all of your lashes, they’ll stay curled all day, and they won’t drop down if it’s humid.
I then follow with a few coats of lengthening mascara and a few coats of volumizing mascara as the last step.
Now let’s move on to the good stuff, shall we?
Mascara Staples: Volumizing
The following are two affordable drugstore mascara staples that I always turn to when I want dark, smokey lashes.
L’oreal Voluminous Extra Volume Collagen Mascara
The first mascara that I reach for when I want intense volume is the L’oreal Voluminous Extra Volume Collagen Mascara in Blackest Black. I love how this gives me a crazy amount of volume if I apply after curling my lashes – so much that it looks like I’m wearing false lashes or have lash extensions. The formula is great because my lashes don’t clump together or and they don’t smudge after application.
The only negative trait about this is the large brush because it constantly smears onto my eyelids when applying. However, I don’t mind putting up with this small annoyance because I really like the results it gives me even though a smaller brush would be more fitting for my eye shape.
The lengthening mascara I always pair this with and that I think complements this well is the L’oreal Telescopic Carbon Black Mascara. I’ll go more into detail about that product later on in this post.
Covergirl LashBlast Volume Mascara
Another great, affordable mascara that provides intense volume is the Covergirl LashBlast Volume Mascara in Very Black.
I like how this changes my lashes from sparse to dark and bold. There is no clumping and no smudging until I decide to take it off with my Body Shop Cleansing Oil at night.
Like the L’oreal Voluminous Extra Volume Collagen Mascara, I’m not crazy about the design of the brush because it’s quite big compared to my eye size so it requires me to be careful when applying it. I do like the great results it gives me though, so I will continue to purchase it.
Mascara Staples: Lengthening
Now, let’s move onto my mascara staples that lengthen the lashes like crazy! I’ve found that they work really well with my short lashes.
L’oreal Telescopic Carbon Black Mascara
My go-to product for crazy length that I always reach for is the L’oreal Telescopic Mascara in Carbon Black. It doesn’t flake on me and my lashes stay curled even after applying a few coats.
I’ve enjoyed the results so much that it has become my everyday mascara for the past few months. It really lengthens my lashes while giving me a small amount of volume that’s just enough for days where I’m not doing anything special.
When I want more definition and need a little more oomph in my look, I like to pair this with the L’oreal Voluminous Extra Volume Collagen Mascara for extra volume. This duo creates my perfect set of lashes without the need to wear false lashes every day.
Clarins Be Long Mascara
I tried the Clarins Be Long Mascara in Black for the first time when I got a trial-sized tube in a gift set last year. After trying it, I absolutely fell in love and had to get my own full-size tube. I just wish this wasn’t so expensive!
This product really lengthens my lashes and is super easy and fast to apply. Usually, other mascaras take me a few minutes to apply (with lots of time between layers to dry) but this allows me to coat my lashes in less than a minute.
Benefit They’re Real! Mascara
Another great higher-end mascara that is a little more expensive in price, but is very similar to the Be Long Mascara, is the Benefit They’re Real! Mascara in Black. This makes my lashes look super long and dark, yet extremely natural. It also lasts all day and doesn’t flake unless the tube has dried out.
What I really like about this product is the smaller sized brush that comes with small bristles at the tip of the wand. These small bristles allow me to easily coat the inner and outer corners of my lashes with product, which otherwise would be a lot more difficult with mascaras that have a larger wand.
Now that you know some of my must-have mascara staples in my beauty kit, which mascaras do you love to get big, bold lashes? Feel free to share!
