No one is perfect and we all commit beauty mistakes at one point or another. These are just some common beauty mistakes that I’m guilty of doing from time to time or have seen other girls do.
1. Putting on too many layers of anti-aging creams and serums
There are some days when my mind irrationally thinks that more is better when I’m slathering on my moisturizers or anti-aging creams. Putting more cream on your face isn’t going to help that fine line magically go away after applying! It’s just a waste of product and money.
Instead, thoroughly wash your face, exfoliate your skin on a regular basis, and lightly pat down your regular skin care products so that they can really sink into your skin. This is the best way for your skin to absorb the product and nutrients without needing to apply layers upon layers of product and wasting money.
2. Curling your lashes after putting mascara on
I’m guilty of doing this sometimes because I love how this really lengthens my lashes. Clamping on the lashes too tightly and with too much force can cause lash breakage more easily, especially if your lashes are brittle and prone to breaking.
3. Going to sleep with a face full of makeup
Unlike my younger days when I didn’t care so much about my skin and would just use a makeup wipe, I’m quite proud to say that I now always make sure to take off all my makeup. That means doing a thorough cleansing oil rinse (my favorite is The Body Shop Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil) followed by regular face wash at night before bed. It doesn’t matter if I’m feeling super lazy or if I feel really tired from going out that night – it’s got to be done! Your skin will thank you.
4. Caking your face with too much foundation
The purpose of foundation is to only provide an even base to your face so that means not putting more than one or two layers all over your face. It’s not made to conceal all your spots or other imperfections! That’s the job of concealer.
5. Too much going on with your makeup at one time
What I mean by this is if you’re wearing a dark, smokey eye, please don’t wear a bright red lip! It clashes and there’s just too much going on. It’s better to just stick to a red lip with neutral eyes, or a dark, smokey eye with nude lips. Although I don’t do this personally, I see this quite often.
6. Not matching the shade of your foundation to your neck
This is a very common problem and I often see girls with faces that are either too white or too orange compared to their necks. I admit that sometimes I am guilty of this as well, especially during the summer months when I’m in that transition phase of trying to figure out which shade I am after using self tanner. It’s best to have a variety of shades on hand in your beauty kit for each season so that you can mix and match to a lighter or darker color when necessary.
And since we’re on the topic of self tanner…
7. Getting patchy and streaky results with self tanner
It’s such a pet peeve of mine to see people who self tan their bodies with orange hands, wrists, ankles, and elbows or they leave their hands stark white. To avoid streaky and patchy skin, it’s important to first exfoliate your skin and then apply a thin layer of moisturizer over the areas that are prone to streaking.
I’ve been guilty of doing this a few times in the past but I’ve learned now to first exfoliate the problem areas and then lightly blend in the product with my tanning mitt. To make sure my hands aren’t orange compared to my body, I only use the remaining product that’s leftover on my mitt and lightly apply it to my hands. Works like a charm every time.
8. Not wearing sunscreen when it’s cloudy, rainy, or overcast outside
It’s so important to keep our skin protected even when it’s not sunny outside. I can be guilty of forgetting to apply sunscreen some days when I’m in a huge rush but most days I do wear it unless it’s already dark outside.
I hope I’m not the only one who makes these beauty mistakes sometimes!
