I’ve been noticing that the older I get, the more I need to baby my skin to get a youthful glow. In the past, I’d been able to get away with just using regular skin care products but it’s definitely harder now that I’m in my late 20’s! After much experimentation with my skin care routine this year, I’ve found that regularly exfoliating has contributed the most to getting rid of my dull skin. Along with it came the added (and most welcomed) benefits of clear, smoother skin.
How To Get Rid Of Dull Skin
In this post, I’ll be talking about the 3 products that I’ve been really loving to give my skin that bright, healthy glow it was missing. If you suffer from dull skin that’s lacking the youthful glow it once had, you might want to give these products a shot to see if they help your skin as much as they’ve helped mine.
Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brightening Toner
The Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brightening Toner has been my favorite chemical exfoliator that I’ve been absolutely loving for the past year to help me achieve clear, glowing skin. I first read about this product from Caroline Hirons when I was looking for a gentler alternative to harsh face scrubs and I got hooked real fast after seeing positive results.
This gentle brightening toner contains BHA/AHA acids that help to slough off the top layer of dead skin cells. The first thing I fell in love with after using this for the first time was how bright and radiant my skin looked the morning after applying it the night before.
Another great selling point about this toner is how it lives up to its claim that it’s gentle. I have a difficult combination of things going on with my skin – it’s oily, acne-prone, extremely sensitive, and I also deal with surface dehydration (a result of me experimenting with bad acne products in the past), so it’s pretty darn hard to find something that my skin likes. Usually, I have problems with finding products that aren’t too harsh but so far this toner hasn’t caused my skin to act up!
I generally like to use the toner once a week when I feel my skin needs the extra added boost. A lot of people are fine with using it as a daily toner as it’s quite mild but I find that it’s still a bit too harsh to use on my sensitive skin every day. If you have sensitive skin like me, be sure to spot test this first to see how your skin reacts to it if you’ve never used any sort of acid before.
Although the toner doesn’t get rid of blackheads, it helps to refine and smooth the texture of the skin and increases the turnover of skin cells at a much faster rate. Hyperpigmentation marks from past small breakouts also take a lot less time to fade when I use this.
Definitely check out the Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brightening Toner if you’re looking for a great chemical exfoliant. Just be sure to protect your skin from the sun for the next few days after using it because it’ll be extra sensitive to the sun. Remember to wear sunscreen and a hat if you’re going to be outside!
Skinfood Pineapple Peeling Gel
I first discovered the Skinfood Pineapple Peeling Gel back in the day when I loved to experiment with Korean skin care products. It’s been almost a decade now since I started using this but I still repurchase it to this day because the product works great!
This is not your traditional exfoliator. How it works is you apply the gel to a dry face with your fingertips and start rubbing your skin in circular motions. You’ll see that as you start rubbing, the gel will start to dissolve and you’ll be able to physically feel and see the dead skin cells rub off onto your fingers. I always find that part pretty cool because it gives me a sense of satisfaction when I see all the gunk coming off my skin.
This doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin at all which is a must for any exfoliant I use. There’s no stinging, redness, or breakouts after – just soft, radiant smooth skin that feels less congested.
The Skinfood Pineapple Peeling Gel is a must-try if you’re looking for something budget-friendly and interesting to try that works effectively for the price.
If you’re more into manual exfoliation or you’re on a budget, a great way to exfoliate your skin is to go the old school route and use a washcloth. You might think that this is absurd if you’re not used to the idea, but it’s actually a really effective (and shall I add, inexpensive) way to get rid of tired, dull skin. Forget about expensive and fancy scrubs if you’re not willing to spend money on pricey products because this method is just as effective as the former and gets the job done!
As a kid, my mom would always just wash my face with a plain old washcloth and my face always felt clean and fresh. I only recently decided to try using the washcloth method again because I was looking to exfoliate my skin without being too abrasive. I then remembered how clean my face felt back then, and boy was I glad I rediscovered it because I’ve had great results so far!
Now, I do want to put a disclaimer though. This is definitely more of an abrasive exfoliation method so if you have extremely sensitive skin, you might want to skip this altogether. I have pretty sensitive skin so I only do this once a week with a very light hand and so far this method has been working fine for me. The frequency changes for me depending on how clogged my skin feels from wearing foundation or if I’m currently dealing with dry, patchy, or dull skin.
Before using the washcloth, I like to take off all of the day’s makeup first by washing my face with my favorite The Body Shop Chamomile Silky Cleansing Oil followed by the Marcelle Ultra Gentle Cleansing Gel. To use the washcloth, I first wet it with warm water, wring out any extra water, and then rub the cloth all over my face in circular motions. You might feel a little tingly sensation when you do this but it shouldn’t be too bad if you’re being careful and not going too hard on your face. And that’s it! I then follow with my regular serum and moisturizer and I’m good to go.
This method really helps to get rid of dull skin and all I’m left with is smooth glowy skin – all thanks to a plain ol’ washcloth! Makeup application is a dream the next day after I use this method and my dry patches disappear. You definitely can’t beat such a cheap but effective way of removing dead skin and I wish I found this method sooner!
